Putting Your Mattress Safely Into Self-Storage

Posted on

Homeowners will typically not consider having to put their mattress into self-storage, but there are a number of situations where you may need to consider this solution. Perhaps your child has gone off to college, and you would like to utilise their room for other purposes, or maybe you have bought a new mattress and are not ready to sell your former one. No matter the reason, you need to ensure that your mattress is stored safely or it will be at risk of deterioration. So what are some things to bear in mind to ensure you safely put your mattress in self-storage?

Ensure the mattress is clean

A misconception some people make when it comes to storing mattresses is that since they will not be in use, they can be stored in the condition they are in. In reality, it is essential to invest in thorough cleaning of the mattress if you would like to prolong its lifespan. If your mattress is dirty, it is easier for mould and fungi to breed inside the mattress. A dirty mattress would also be likely to attract pests, which would eat into your mattress and severely damage it.

You may be tempted to clean the mattress on your own, but this puts it at risk of internal dampness. Instead, consider professional cleaning such as hot water extraction that would provide a deep clean but also ensure the mattress dries in a short period.

Ensure the mattress is wrapped

Before the mattress is put away for the long term, you should make sure it is securely wrapped. The wrapping functions to prevent dust and dirt from settling on the mattress as these could cause permanent staining. Sealing your mattress also safeguards it from the risk of pest infestations like mites, rodents and more. The easiest way to wrap your mattress would be to invest in plastic storage bags, which can be purchased at your local hardware store.

Before covering your mattress, ensure that it has been air dried for some time. Failure to do so could lead to moisture being trapped inside the plastic, and this can cause pose the risk of mould and rot. In addition to plastic wrapping the mattress, you may want to consider a climate controlled storage unit. These types of units will ensure there is no risk of your mattress being exposed to any damp whatsoever.
