What Should Be Put in a Self-Storage Unit, and Why

Posted on

A self-storage unit is a great choice for any apartment dweller or someone in a smaller home, or for those who are just collectors and always seem to be drowning in their own "stuff." However, a self-storage unit can be a good choice for anyone no matter the size of your home, as they can provide some great advantages over trying to store certain items in your own home or garage. Note what is meant by that, what should be kept in a self-storage unit, and why this can be to your advantage.

Caravans, ATVs

If you own a caravan, ATV, sports car, jeep, or other fun "toy," it's good to keep this in a self-storage unit. This can protect these items from dents and dings caused by an errant bike, from being hit by your own car when you're entering the garage, and from other such damage. Even if you always keep those toys covered, remember that a covering can only offer so much protection from the points of skis, a driver with a poor judge of distance, and other hazards.

It's also good to choose a self-storage unit over keeping these items outside, in your side yard or backyard. Even with that cover, these items may be prone to rust and other corrosion when stored outside; covers can even trap moisture and humidity under tehm, increasing the chance of rust developing. It might also increase the resale value of such an item if you could tell a potential buyer that it was kept in a self-storage unit rather than outside.

Power tools for business

While you may not need to keep your everyday power tools in a self-storage unit, storing the items you use for business in an offsite location can be the right choice. As with the "toys" mentioned above, storing items away from your home can offer added protection from potential damage, and will mean less risk of a child getting hold of such tools and damaging them, losing them, or causing injury.

Valuables

Don't keep valuable items like antiques or artwork at home, unless they're on display. Even if you pack away these valuable and delicate items in plastic bins and totes, they can still be damaged from the humidity and heat that gets trapped in an attic, or the dampness of a basement. A self-storage unit can offer temperature and humidity controls as well as high-tech security that you don't have at home, keeping your items safe.
