How to Get the Most Out of Your Storage Space

Posted on

Self-storage units usually provide a temporary or long-term storage solution for many. While they may seem simple to organise, this is not always true. A few wrong moves and a large storage space can quickly become a disorganised and chaotic space. Maximising on this space should not be difficult, however, and a little strategic packing can help you fit more items and save you some money while you are at it. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Create an Inventory List

When storing many items in a storage unit, it's difficult to remember everything after a month or two has elapsed. While it's easy to remember large items like a bed or sofa, smaller items such as artwork, electronics and clothes can easily skip your mind. To keep everything in check, maintain a list of all items stored, take photos of the items and record them in a spreadsheet with a small description.

While you are at it, label your boxes using a permanent marker or printed label to help you remember what items were stored in which box.

Store Larger and Heavy Items First

As you begin packing items into your storage unit, remember to line up large, heavy items such as towards furniture and heavy boxes along the wall in the back. This makes organising a tad bit easier since these will not move around often. Furthermore, this creates a base for lighter and smaller items.

Place Frequently Accessed Items at The Front

Of the items stored, chances are there are some that you plan on using more frequently than others. In this respect, items you plan on accessing in the near future, such as seasonal clothing, should be labelled appropriately and placed towards the front. This saves you the trouble of rummaging through a mountain of boxes every time you want an item.

Disassemble Furniture

To utilise your space more efficiently, take apart large furniture such as beds and table legs, and store them in an upright position towards the back. By storing such items upright, you'll inadvertently create floor space for other items.

Go Vertical

When organising your space, remember to go vertical with bulky items to maximise the use of your storage unit. Stacking boxes and furniture upright allows you to fit more into the existing space. Furthermore, you can employ the use of portable shelving racks to help you stack multiple items more easily without running the risk of damage.

With the above tips, your storage unit should sufficiently store your belongings. The efficient use of storage space will save you both time and money. A well-organised space reduces search times and fits more items, negating the need to pay for additional space.
